Emma Jones, founder and editor of Enterprise Nation as well an ambassador for the StartUp Britain campaign, believes ministers shouldn't be linking the growth of small businesses with job creation. Her comments follow criticism of small businesses for not taking on additional staff. Emma says, "Stop associating growth with jobs. Growth equals more small enterprises, which drives the economy. But this is not because they hire people, but due to the fact that they outsource." Emma believes that small companies need to follow three rules to reinvent themselves to get them through the current economic conditions. She recommends that businesses focus on their niche function, use the Internet to engage with the global audience and, finally, outsource non-core functions. However, it isn't all down to the work of small businesses, as the media needs to be on board too, in order to give small companies exposure as well as larger corporations. Plus, the children are the future and they need to be encouraged to go into business when they are older should they wish to do so.
